Ilya – 8 My name is Anna. My son, Ilya, has autism. Before the war began, his autism was calming down, but since hearing the bombs and sirens it has worsened. Even since we have arrived in Denmark, if he hears a train make a loud noise, he shouts “we are going to die now!” It is very hard. He is a good boy and is helping out at the hotel.

Roman – 60 I’m from Ternopil in west-ern Ukraine. But for 4 years from 2015-2019 I served as a volunteer with the army in the Donbass region. It has been an honour to serve my country, like my grandfather before, but now I am 60 and therefore too old to continue. My son is 35 years old and is serving with the Ukrainian army in the Donbass region.

Inna – 25 My parents got married at 18 and have now been together for 30 years! They’re still together - in Ukraine, in danger. When I left for Denmark, I just took two pairs of jeans and two hoodies. My dad asked me “why don’t you take more valuables with you?” My answer: If I could take more with me, it would be you, mum, my cat and rabbit.

Venera – 8 At 5am we woke up to noisy explosions. We were very scared and my mother said the war had begun. Rockets were flying constantly, and something exploded. On the 7th day of the war, fighting broke out near our city. We almost lived in the basement for 10 days, always warmly dressed. We decided to flee when the tanks came. Thank you DK.

Alexandr My Partner and I fled from Ukraine under the sound of bombing and gunfire. It was frightening. We made it out of Ukraine. I wanted to return, but was denied access. We are now in Copenhagen, hoping that my country will get through this tragedy.

Taras – 17 After secondary school, I started medical school in Kyiv. I don’t want to be a doctor and don’t know what I want to do now, esp-ecially now that I’m sitting in a hotel in Copenhagen getting very bored. My parents are still in Zapor-izhzhya and fear for their lives. I had family in Russia, but they believe Putin, so I can’t call them family.

Alexandra – 18 I lived in Zaporizhzhya and was just enjoying going to the gym, dancing and developing myself before the war started. My mother, stepdad, dad and I fled to Greece where I have resid-ency. Now I am visiting my school friend, Taras. Even though I have the freedom to travel anywhere in the world, I just want to go back home where I belong.

Polina - 21 I'm a professional acrobat from Ukraine. With the outbreak of the war, my anxiety and fear intensified. I have a distrust of people that I didn't have before. I still can't believe that people are capable of doing such things to other people."

Marianne – 25 Before the war I worked for Jabil. In my spare time, I was a child-ren's animator and embroidered icons. When the shelling started, my whole life turned upside down. Every day I prayed to God to protect me and my children. And God heard my prayers. In Denmark, I calmed down, but daily I dream of my prosperous Ukraine

Oksana - 42. At the time the war started I was in charge of 8 clothes shops in Ukraine. I decided to leave Harkiv and my business on the 11th March 2022, to start a 5 day journey to Copenhagen. When I arrived, I slept for a week. By March 27th, my flat complex was bombed. I no longer have a home or business in Ukraine. Harkiv has been totally destroyed.

Natalia – 14 I’m from Zhytomyr. I have a brother and sister volunteering in the war. My mother recently had a stroke; otherwise she too would’ve volunteered. There were rockets flying over the house at night. We couldn’t relax. My mother, other brother and I are safe now, but I’m worried for my older siblings and my other brother has closed up.

Tamara No one could believe it when the war started… I thank God that he saved us from going to our country house NW of Kyiv, where these horrors happened. It was scary to leave and scary to stay in Kyiv. My daughter and I left on the 4th day …at first I thought I’d just be gone for 2 weeks. My husband is still there. We are in touch daily.

Oleg Being a refugee is not easy! The war taught me to live simply - not to be tied to money. I went here through 3 countries: Moldova, Romania and Sweden. Everywhere I was helped by strangers. I used to think that there were very few good people. Now I know that this is not so. I am calm here. I like Denmark very much. I want to stay.
